Once upon a time, there was a small village where a poor but kind-hearted old man called Domba lived. He was so poor that he barely had enough to buy food for himself. Every day he would get up early in the morning, go to the woods and collect firewood which he would then take to the village market and sell at a low price.
Although Domba was very poor, he was happy as he was able to make enough money to feed himself and live a comfortable life. Every morning, he would visit the forest and collect firewood, but one morning something strange happened. While he was in the forest, he heard a loud noise coming from a nearby tree. He walked closer and saw an injured monkey trapped in the tree. The poor creature had fallen from the tree the day before and was now in great pain, so Domba did not hesitate to help the poor thing.
He carefully cut the tree and freed the monkey, which was filled with joy. However, the monkey was too weak to move. Domba then carried the monkey on his shoulders and brought it to his hut. He took good care of the animal and fed it with bananas, rice and other fruits that he had stored in his house.
Every day, the monkey would wait for Domba to come from the forest and give it food. The monkey also helped Domba in his day-to-day chores like cleaning the house, fetching water from the river, etc. They both shared a strong bond of friendship and love.
At night when the monkey would sleep beside him, Domba would tell the animal a story, that of a noble king who was kind and generous to his people. The monkey would listen to the story and dream of the day when it would be as kind and generous as the king.
Days passed and the monkey grew stronger. Seeing this, Domba decided it was time to let the monkey go back to the forest where it belonged. He hugged the monkey and said, “My friend, you are strong now. You can take care of yourself, so you should go back to the forest.”
The monkey hesitated for a moment but then, realizing that it had to go, hugged Domba and said, “Thank you for saving my life and taking care of me. I will never forget what you did for me.” After saying this, it flew away into the sky.
Domba was filled with joy and tears of happiness. He had not only saved the life of a helpless creature but also earned a friend for life.
Moral of the story:
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Everyone should help others without expectation of anything in return. Generosity of spirit is the greatest form of strength and true friendship is based on the spirit of giving and unconditional love.
